About

Liza Villareal, EHS orchestra director

Edison Orchestras are five string ensembles, from Beginning Middle School Orchestra through Advanced High School Orchestra, all led under the direction of Liza Villarreal (Mrs. V), who is entering her 20th year in public music education and her 9th year at Edison.

Graduates from the Edison Orchestra program have earned scholarships to study music at the University of Tulsa, University of Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State University. Students have also been accepted into ivy league schools including Dartmouth and Yale.

In the 2024-2025 School Year, the High School Advanced Orchestra earned the OSSAA Sweepstakes Award, adding to their list of Superior ratings at Regional and State Contests. In the past 4 years, 15 students have earned a place in the OkMEA All State Orchestra, and over 50 students have earned a Superior rating at the OSSAA State Solo & Ensemble Contest.

Edison Orchestra students are active in their school community, playing for graduation, the school musical, and performing in several concerts a year. Outside of school, students participate in the Tulsa Youth Symphony, Tulsa Honors Orchestra, and Sistema Tulsa. Each summer, Edison orchestra students have been invited to attend the prestigious Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute camp at Quartz Mountain.

As an ensemble, Edison Orchestra students have traveled to Chicago, Nashville, Disney World in Orlando, St. Louis, and New York City. Locally, they have performed the National Anthem for Tulsa Drillers games and BMX International races. On December 2, 2024, Edison Orchestra students performed the National Anthem for the City of Tulsa Mayoral Inauguration.

In August of 2024, Mrs. V won the Barry Manilow Music Educator Award, bringing national recognition to the program. As a professional violinist who got her start in a public school orchestra, she is thrilled to provide that same opportunity to her students year after year.
